Books, books and more books…

I have so many books that I can not sell or give away. But a thought came to me that, when the time comes, I need to take just a few on that journey. So as an experiment here are a few and why I have them.

The first one is a book that did not belong to me.

This book made me laugh so much and still does on re-reading. Peter Brookes was of the ‘Sloane Ranger Handbook’ fame so already we can date this, 1979. It is losely based on the ‘Dairy of a Nobody’ a Victorian tale of Mr. Pooter, again a much loved tome. So updated it is just how we all lived those times, cocktail parties, balls, no work, no money and no real girl friends. We were constantly being dumped!

Interestingly the back cover is rather pertinent, about the Persians!

However on opening, the inscription is of that time again.

Where is L-J? And who was she?

Here are my memories, which are so vague. We teased a friend who was ‘going out with her’ that her last name was Wright, so of course it was ‘Miss Wright called for you’.

But I think I met her first, so the only facts I know are that she lived in Fulham, she lent me the book, why? But I met her at a party, way back in 1979.

That party. Well I drove of course in a Honda N600 and left at about three in the morning and stopped and slept in the car on the bridge still in a dinner jacket, and that was that I suppose.

But the book remains with me, a mystery to be solved.
